Australia: Macnamara candidates discuss climate change and energy

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

Two candidates for the Melbourne electorate of Macnamara today discussed issues of climate change and energy in a climate-themed forum hosted by the Port Phillip Emergency Climate Action Network, which describes itself as aiming to “create and sustain a strong climate action movement in Port Phillip to address the climate crisis”.

Out of the eight candidates standing for Macnamara, Labor MP Josh Burns and Greens candidate Steph Hodgins-May were both in attendance. Liberal candidate Colleen Harkin told Wikinews that she was invited to attend the forum, but declined due to another commitment. None of the other five candidates standing for Macnamara were in attendance.

Both Burns and Hodgins-May stood in Macnamara at the previous federal election, with Burns polling 31.78% of the vote and Hodgins-May 24.24%. While Harkin did not stand previously, Liberal candidate Kate Ashmor recieved 37.37% at the last federal election, with Burns ultimately winning after the distribution of voters’ second preferences.
