Unless you’re offering a product or service on your website not available anywhere else, then you’ve got nothing to worry about because your audience will definitely stay and come back for more regardless of how you present your company. However, if you’re just like everyone else that has plenty of competition, creating a well-organized and attractive web page is extremely important not only to attract new readers, but to encourage them to stay on your site longer. If you’re new to web design and you already have the most brilliant idea in mind, here are some do’s and don’ts that you should follow to make your web design a success:

1) Always Think of Your Readers

When working on web pages, make sure that each page will work effectively on all browsers and operating systems before making them live. Creating web pages compatible to your browser and OS alone will definitely annoy your readers. If you’re going to use movies or music, give your audience a choice to view them. Many people will leave a site based on a background music that they cannot turn off while browsing the pages.

When deciding on a background color, choose a color that is easy on the eyes, so your readers can view the content with ease. Similarly, when you choose fonts to use, make sure to go for standard fonts like Verdana, Arial and Geneva. This way, you’re pretty sure that almost everyone who visits your site can view the pages without straining their eyes reading blurred fonts.

2) Choose your elements carefully

Blinking images, animated GIFs, image backgrounds, scrolling texts and pop-up windows are a “no-no” in web design because these elements not only distracts your viewers from focusing on your product or services, but also scream amateur. In addition, these elements can also slow your website down, so it’s best to avoid them as much as you can.

3) Think about Readability and Usability

Choose a simple layout that your readers can easily navigate. You should never make your pages too wide; the largest size acceptable is around 770 pixels wide. Step into your audience shoes and learn how to make the pages easier to read and use. Aim to minimize clicking because the less clicks a reader does, the more organized a web page is. Provide a home and menu on each page, so whenever the visitors feel lost, they can navigate the site from the page they’re viewing. Make the fonts large enough to read and refrain from typing in ALL CAPS and using exclamation points frequently.

4) Organize or Minimize Ads

Although placing ads on your web pages is a good way to make money, you should still think about your readers when using advertisements. As such, control the number of ads on your pages and avoid blinking, flashing and excessively large ads on your site. You can always look at other sites to get a grasp of good web designs, but as long as you follow these basic tips, produce interesting content or useful products and create web pages reader-friendly, your web site can go a long way.

Web Design Programs

Creating stunning website designs can be very costly and even time consuming. However, in recent years many web design software’s have been developed that allow novice and professionals alike to create web site designs. The majority of the design programs that are sold on the market are inexpensive and in some cases free.
