NASA issues survivability report on Columbia crash

Friday, January 2, 2009

NASA has issued a report on survivability during the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, entitled “Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report”. Although the report finds the accident was impossible to survive, it still faulted a number of design issues with the astronauts’ equipment.

The accident investigation report was released in 2003, the year of the crash. During launch on January 16, the spacecraft’s wing was holed when a chunk of foam detached and struck it. The shuttle then broke up on re-entry on February 1 over Texas, killing the seven on board.

This new report reveals details of what happened to the astronauts during the accident sequence, although some parts have remained confidential to the victims’ families. The report reveals that within seconds of the breakup commencing the crew became unconscious due to the rapid depressurization and that they never regained consciousness prior to their deaths.

The report notes that the cabin began spinning wildly, causing some of the astronauts’ helmets to come off. The report noted that most on board were secured only by lap harnesses that offered no restraint to the upper body and were not designed to cope with sideways motion, meaning “lethal trauma” was caused by the rotation. However, the report was unable to determine whether the astronauts had died from oxygen deprivation or the extreme nature of their injuries.

The pressure suits the crew wore, introduced after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, were criticised as the crew could not keep their visors down throughout re-entry due to a design limitation that would have caused excess levels of oxygen to be present had they done so, leaving the suits unsealed. The gloves also made many tasks difficult or impossible. When the accident occurred, three people were not wearing gloves, one was not wearing a helmet, and none had their visors down. The helmets also did not conform to the heads of the wearers.

Upon disintegration, the occupants were exposed to extreme heat and high friction from re-entry. The astronauts likely died very quickly, and were probably dead by the time Columbia broke apart.

The report added that although the crew all wore parachutes, they had to be activated by the crew — impossible as they were unconscious. The report concluded that future spacecraft require sturdier construction and better restraints, while safety devices should be automatic. NASA is designing better suits and helmets.

Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”

5 Different Kinds Of Garden Sheds To Consider Building

By Sara Edmund

When considering building a garden shed, you have to realize that there are a number of options to choose from. You do not have to settle on a shed that you have no interest in just because it is all that is out there. Of course there are a number of variables that can determine what kind of shed you build. But it is important you understand that you have options. Here are five different kinds of garden sheds to look into.

1. Basic shed

If you are looking for a generic shed to accommodate your typical gardening needs, you can construct a basic shed fairly easily. You can build the shed however big you choose, but a common size to start with is an 8’X12′ shed. You can go with a gable roof, single or double doors, and as many windows as you choose. The great thing about the basic shed is you can put however much money into it as you want.

2. Three-in-one garden shed

A three-in-one garden shed has everything you can imagine. It has a regular garden, a gazebo and a potting shed all in one package. The sky is the limit with what you can do with this construction option. You can build all three in one, or you can leave out the potting shed or gazebo. This can be perfect for storing your garden tools as well as taking care of any garden needs you may have.

3. Garden tool shed

There is nothing worse than trying to garden, but not being able to find your tools. It seems impossible to keep everything organized and in the right spot if you do not have a tool shed. A garden tool shed can help you keep track of all of your tools from rakes, hoes, shovels, and buckets. If you do not have much room in your yard for an actual shed, a garden tool shed can be perfect because it is small yet allows you to stay organized.

4. Redwood cedar shingle garden shed

If you are looking to add a little style and class into your garden shed, a redwood cedar shingle shed is the way to go. It is nothing overly big, but certainly grabs your attention. You can place it in just about any garden corner. Plus, the cedar shingle roof is long lasting. In fact, the roof will actually improve with age. This is something you cannot find often with sheds as they can tend to deteriorate from time to time. If you plan on building it yourself, expect it to take some time. But it is well worth the effort once you have a completed project.

5. Large shed

If you have the room, building a large shed can be amazing for your yard. It gives you the ability to store however many tools you want, build a table or bench of some sort to handle your gardening inside, and you can add firewood racks to stay warm during those winter months. Who would have ever known you can garden in the winter.

As you can see, there are a number of different garden shed possibilities to take into consideration. You will have to take other variables into account like size, location and the cost of constructing the different sheds. But it is nice to know that you have options to choose from. While the five sheds listed in this article are among the most popular, there are plenty more you can choose from. Take the time to get online and see what kinds of choices you have. The last thing you want to do is just settle for something you do not like.

Korean leaders Moon and Kim meet days after NK-US summit cancellation

Monday, May 28, 2018

On Saturday, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un held an unannounced meeting in the Joint Security Area straddling the Korean Demilitarized Zone, two days after United States President Donald Trump withdrew from the scheduled June 12 high-level meeting in Singapore.

Moon initiated the meeting after hearing Trump had withdrawn from the proposed summit with Kim. Trump’s decision to withdraw came on Friday after increased tensions over scheduled military exercises, North Korean official Choe Son Hui referring to US Vice President Mike Pence a “political dummy” and threatened nuclear action. Since then, both Pyongyang and the White House have issued statements indicating they are willing to have a meeting of some kind regardless.

Adam Mount of the Federation of American Scientists’ Defense Posture Project referred to Trump’s response as a “temper tantrum” and applauded Moon’s “bold but risky” actions: “When Kim Jong-un was allowed to split the negotiations into separate tracks with Trump and Moon, he gained leverage over both,” Mount told the public via Tweet. “… Trump says ‘everybody plays games.’ Moon Jae-in is not playing a game: he must keep his people safe from war. Each of Trump’s whims shakes the walls of the Blue House.” The Blue House is South Korea’s presidential residence.

The meeting lasted roughly two hours. It was the second major meeting between Moon and Kim in as many months. In April, they met to discuss denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and plans for a formal peace treaty to replace the cease-fire that ended the Korean War on July 27, 1953, a measure that would require involving the US and China.

Although the White House stated their intent on withdrawing from the summit, North Korea’s state-run news agency reported Friday the two leaders are still scheduled for further “high-level talks”. North Korea explosively destroyed buildings and tunnels at the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site. The North Koreans invited international media observers to the demolitions, who later issued skeptical reports regarding the full extent of the demolition, according to NPR.
