KKE: Interview with the Greek Communist Party

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

Couple takes lawyer hostage and said to have explosives

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

A male and a female took 3 people hostage at a law firm in Statesboro, Georgia. Police blocked off a part of this rural town on Monday. Two suspects , a man and a woman, took a lawyer hostage and claimed that they had explosives.

The suspects, Robert Eugene Brower, 43, a former client of the lawyer, and the female whose name was not released, gave up after demands for cigarettes and food were met and they spoke with a family member.

The standoff lasted for 24 hours and ended, “peacefully,” at around 10AM said Larry Schnall, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

The last of the 3 hostages to be released was identified as Michael Hostilo. He and the other two hostages were not injured. There is no word on the names of the other hostages.

Earlier reports stated that there had been a “loud boom” coming from the scene at about six o’clock this morning. Authorities have not stated what the booms were.

Police are now inside the building to locate and defuse the explosive device that the suspects claimed to have had.

Initially when police arrived, there were 3 hostages, but 2 had been recently released and were unharmed, said Maggie Fitzgerald, a city spokeswoman. “They are upset with some legal issues within the recent past and want to get those issues resolved. We are doing everything possible to end this situation without anyone being hurt.”

In a news conference Monday night, Police Chief Stan York said Brower was angry about “having been convicted in a criminal case”, in which the lawyer was his court-appointed attorney. York did not elaborate on the demands of the hostage-takers, other than saying, “they only wanted to call attention to the case.”

Georgia State Trooper Larry Schnall, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol, said a SWAT team was sent to the scene.

This morning authorities convinced the two suspects to give-up, but “incidents leading to an escalation resulted in some gunfire,” Stan York in a press conference just moments ago. No one was hurt in the brief eruption of gunfire.

Police later said when the suspects tried to surrender they became apprehensive and made a threatening gesture prompting authorities to draw their guns and open fire.

The standoff began at around 9AM on Monday.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Sunday, December 11, 2005

A series of large explosions have occurred close to Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire, UK. The source of the explosions has been confirmed as the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal (HOSL), Hemel Hempstead, known locally as the Buncefield complex. Up to 150 fire fighters are reported to be at the scene with 10 fire appliances and 1 specialist foamer.

The first ‘blast’ was heard near Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 11 Dec at 6 am. Further smaller explosions followed at 6:24am , 6:26am, 6:30am. BBC News 24 reported an additional, fourth large explosion. Hertfordshire Police Constabulary are currently treating the explosion as an accident.

Reports say the explosion, which registered 2.4 on the Richter scale, was heard as far away as Oxford, and Whitehall, Central London which is 60km (38 miles) away. Eyewitness statements report that the explosion was heard from at least 160km (100 miles) away and as far away as France and The Netherlands. Pilots reported noticing the blast from the North Sea and the West Country area of the UK. The M1 motorway which runs close by has been closed in both directions near the blast which is causing travel chaos as other roads become congested.

Malcom Stewart, a BBC News24 eyewitness who is a tanker driver for the site has reported that the site supplies several oil companies and is a joint operation between Total UK and Texaco, it is also used by BP, Shell and the British Pipeline association. The complex is not a refinery but a storage facility for refined petroleum awaiting distribution to airports and filling stations. The eyewitness reports that the depot has approximately 20 tanks which can hold about 3 million gallons (11 million litres or 70,000 barrels) each. Another News24 eyewitness has just reported that he has seen at least 5 of these tanks on fire.

The depot operates on a 24 hour basis and is split into 2 parts – aviation fuel and domestic fuel. A number of eyewitnesses have reported on UK news that the aviation fuel side appears to be the part of the site that has been affected.

Local authorities were not immediately available for comment but there have been reports of casualties.

Some reports on live television state that, “Several other neighbours said they did see a plane go into the depot.” BBC News 24 were also discussing the idea a possible plane crash as the cause of the explosions. Hertfordshire police have now gone on the record to say that there is no plane involved (BBC News24).

The police have issued a contact number 0800 096 0095 and asked that people do not call the emergency services in Hertfordshire directly unless it is an emergency.

In addition to being an oil storage depot, it is a major hub on the UK oil pipeline network with pipelines to Killingholme Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR), Humberside (10 inch), Merseyside (10 and 12 inch), Coryton on the Thames Estuary (14 inch) and Heathrow (6 and 8 inch) and Gatwick airports radiating from it.

The disaster is believed to be the worst explosion at a petrochemical plant in the UK since the Flixborough disaster of 1974.Hertfordshire’s Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said: “This is possibly the largest incident of its kind in peacetime Europe.”

A firefighting press officer said that they are stock piling foam from neighboring regions for a prolonged attach which they hope will stop the spread of the fire, however, the inferno itself will have to burn out which could take between 24 hours and a few days.

Despite the authorities saying that there is no need to panic buy petrol, filling stations have had above average queues since this morning and some small garages have ran out.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has visited the scene.

Raheja Phoenix Kathputli Colony Shadipur New Delhi Location Map Price List Floor Payment Plan Review

This project is the first of its kind, In-situ Slum Re-development Project at Kathputli Colony spread over 5.22 hectares, near Shadipur Depot by Delhi Development Authority. The project envisages construction of 2800 EWS units for the squatter families of Kathputli Colony. In a move to provide better living conditions for urban poor, the development work at Kathputli Colony project would act as a pilot project in Delhi and also set a benchmark for many such projects to follow to make Delhi a slum free State.Beside redevelopment of this colony, we will be developing high-end residential complex having approx. 3 lacs sq. ft. saleble area and a commercial complex having approx. 2.80 lacs sq. ft. saleble area. The project is located in heart of city and surrounded by posh commercial and residential localities of Central Delhi and distance from Connaught Place is just 5 min. drive. The initial development activities has already been started. At Kathputli Colony near Patel Nagar in west Delhi, strings and puppets are making way for the capital’s tallest building. With a planned height of 190m, and 54 floors, Raheja Phoenix will not only be the city’s first true skyscraper (generally defined as a building taller than 150m) but also a sounding board for its elite’s residential preferences. In a city where garden bungalows are the height of aspirational living, and lower floors fetch a premium in residential towers, selling apartments worth crores at vertiginous heights might prove a challenge, feel experts. But they also believe the success of this project could be the long-awaited stimulus for a gradual transformation of the city’s skyline.Anshuman Magazine, head of international property consultants CBRE, says the time has come for Delhi to grow vertically, especially because land prices have skyrocketed. And breaking from the city’s mid-rise trend – residential buildings of 12-15 floors – some developers are already constructing premium residential towers of 20 or more floors.Parsvnath Developers, which has both residential and commercial buildings in Delhi, has planned more than 20 floors at two of its projects: La Tropicana at Civil Lines and Parsvnath Paramount at Subhash Nagar, near Rajouri Garden. DLF, too, plans to build 20-odd floors at its projects in Greater Kailash-II and Moti Nagar. With a planned height of 190m, and 54 floors, elite residential colonies in Delhi will soon have to measure up to Raheja Phoenix, the capital’s tallest building. The developers sound bullish about skyscrapers. R K Arora, CMD of Supertech, which is building the 255-metre, 60-storey North Eye project in Noida’s Sector 74, says, “The trend has always been popular in Mumbai but is now catching on in north India. We are going to launch another high-rise project soon in Sector 94.” Says Raheja Developers’ chairman Navin Raheja, “Community living will become a part of life in India soon, with condominiums becoming the norm. It’s time we capitalized on the trend in Delhi as well.” His company has plans for another skyscraper project in the NCR: the 57-storey Revanta in Gurgaon. Another company, Ireo, recently announced it will build a 51-floor project, Victory Valley, in Gurgaon. Is it a lasting trend? With rates starting around Rs 8,800 per sq ft, these apartments are by no means cheap, but Magazine says regulatory hurdles and poor infrastructure, not price, could hobble the trend. “FAR (floor area ratio) restrictions mean that you pay more if you go vertical, as compared to the same FAR nearer ground. The ratio needs to be addressed to allow really tall buildings to come up in Delhi,” he says, adding that sanitation and traffic issues also need to be addressed to promote high-density living in towers. While the Phoenix project will be remembered as a milestone in Delhi’s vertical rise, it will not pitchfork the city into Mumbai’s league where several buildings taller than 200 metres are under construction. But the Delhi project can draw some solace by association, as it is a joint venture with the company that built the world’s tallest building: the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It also exceeds the city’s currently tallest building – the 112-metre Civic Centre – by more than a Qutb Minar’s length. Housing residential, retail and commercial structures across 14 acres, the Phoenix is one of DDA’s few public-private partnership success stories. The project will also create 2,800 dwelling units for the slum dwellers it has displaced. In a landmark deal, Raheja Developers, Delhi has inked a $ 204 million (about Rs 1,020 Cr) contract with Dubai-based Arabtec construction company that built the tallest tower in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai and also, landmark buildings like Okhta tower in Russia, Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi and also have the credit of making the Palace of the king of Dubai. Initially, Arabtec will start construction on three of the Raheja projects, Raheja Revanta, Raheja Phoenix and Raheja Srishti. The Raheja Revanta Project, Gurgaon, will be the first project to be constructed by them which would be one of the tallest skyscrapers in India. It is learnt that these projects in Northern India require specialised technology and manpower quality which was not up to the mark with any of the contracting companies in India. Raheja Revanta in Gurgaon will be over 56 storeys with a helipad and it will have first of its kind skybridge with an infinity pool at the 46th floor overlooking the Aravallis. The Raheja Phoenix project will have the tallest skyscraper in Delhi located at Patel Nagar,New Delhi and will comprise 54 storied tower with a skyclub and helipad. The height clearance for both the buildings has been cleared by DGCA.Using the latest international state-ofthe-art technologies, Arabtec will also construct 2800 EWS houses under slum redevelopment PPP project of Rahejas with DDA in a time bound manner of two years. While talking to Raheja about their tallest building, they mentioned that the project would redefine the skyline of Gurgaon and will be much ahead of the construction standards in the country. These homes will be digitally controlled and shall have high standards of home automation controlled through ipad, iphone, blackberry or desktop. One would even be able to switch on and off fans, lights, TV, music , air-conditioning and curtains enabling you to interact with your home. It will be a self sustaining green project to take care of energy and water conservation. The project will also have a large spa facility under arrangement with Amatrra which has been awarded the ‘Best Lifestyle Day Spa’ by Limca Book of Records and visited by the who’s who of the country.Amatrra homes in the complex will be sold by invitation only. When asked why Arabtec chose to form JV with Raheja, Martin Pinder, Director,Arabtec quoted “after talking to many developers in India, we concluded that Raheja Developers is the most professionally managed, technology driven, system oriented and almost debt free company with strong cash flows. They have a happy customer base and have to their credit several international and national level awards like ‘Best Developer Worldwide’ ,’Best Developer in India by Euromoney’ and over 40 other awards recently. And that we found them to be reliable long term partners”.

A compilation of brief news reports for Monday, May 7, 2007.

A 30 meter section of a gas pipeline in Luka (near Kiev) in Ukraine has been destroyed by an explosion. Although supplies to Europe via this pipeline have stopped, Ukrainian Energy Minister Georgi E. Boyko said that supplies to Europe would not be affected.

“There are no changes in volumes of gas being transported,” Yuri Korolchuk said. “Volumes due to pass through the damaged section are being redirected through the Soyuz pipeline.”

Normal flows are reported in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Romania.

Copper prices are rising. Between record copper imports from China, and a mining strike in Peru, the prices have climbed to over $8100 (United States dollars) a tonne, for a gain of $575 dollars over the last week. However the upward trend is not new, it has been climbing for quite some time. In April 2003, the price of copper was under $2000 a tonne.

The metal market has been tending up due to growth in the Chinese industrial production. This trickles down to the local level, where the buying price at scrap yards is ever climbing, making scrap metal collection a more profitable endeavour for individual people using pick up trucks or other such vehicles to collect and cash in the scrap metal at metal buying yards. It can be collected via agreements with businesses, from the garbage, or, sometimes, by theft.

Copper prices fell today on the NYMEX commodity exchange from US$3.7545 per pound to US$3.7125 based on the July futures contract.

Six bomb attacks kill 95 in Baghdad

Thursday, August 20, 2009

According to Iraqi police, at least 95 people have been killed and half a thousand wounded after six explosions in Iraq’s capital of Baghdad on Wednesday.

Eyewitness reports say that two main attacks targeted the finance and foreign ministries. Police sources say that the blasts, which were caused by vehicles filled with explosives, all took place within several minutes.

Major General Qassim Atta, spokesman for the national armed forces’ operation in the capital, said that “a truck bomb went off near the Salhiyeh intersection and it caused casualties and a number of civilian cars were destroyed. We accuse the Baathist alliance of executing these terrorist operations.”

As a result of the attacks, Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki called for a security review. “The criminal operations that happened today no doubt call for a re-evaluation of our plans and our security methods to face the terrorist challenges,” he said.

The attacks are the deadliest in Baghdad since June 24, when 62 people died after a bomb on a motorcycle detonated.
